Curiosity-gap hooks - opening a loop the viewer has to stay to close
The opener that withholds the payoff. When a gap holds attention through the body, and when it reads as clickbait and costs you the click.
A curiosity-gap hook opens a small hole in what the viewer knows, then makes closing it contingent on watching. Precision is the whole game. Too vague and it reads as clickbait. Too specific and it answers itself before the video does. What you want is a viewer who can see the shape of the missing answer without already holding it.
The Only Opener Priced Across the Whole Video
Every other opener is priced in the first three seconds. The curiosity gap is priced across the whole video. The loop you open in those first seconds is a debt, and the payoff is where you settle it. That is what makes the pattern expensive to get wrong: a weak stop costs you one viewer, but a weak payoff costs you the ones who stayed. The taxonomy names the move that refuses to settle at all: an open loop carried into the next video instead of closed.
When It Works
- Longer scripts, where attention has to survive a body beat before the payoff
- Products whose mechanism is genuinely counterintuitive and worth withholding
- Story-led and storytime formats, where the gap is the narrative and not a device bolted on
- Organic-style creative aiming for completion rate, not an immediate click
When It Does Not
- The payoff is ordinary. A loop that closes on nothing teaches the viewer to distrust your next ad
- Short direct-response cuts where the click has to happen before the loop could close
- The gap is vague, and vagueness reads as having nothing to withhold
- The viewer can guess the answer, and the loop closes before the body starts
What Admetra Measures
- Position in the taxonomy
- Hook opener 6 of 10 in Admetra’s parts taxonomy, keyed “curiosity_storytime” and labeled “Curiosity / storytime”.
- How Admetra tags it
- “curiosity_gap” is a named value in the closed hook vocabulary - one of the six types the v8 prompt schema and the v12 contract share. The vocabulary is enforced in code in the v12 contract, which is opt-in per invocation; the daily pipeline still runs v8, whose prompt instructs six of the same values - v8 carries no “texture_shock”, and closes on “none” where v12 closes on “other”.
- Where the pattern continues
- The payoff section carries an “open_loop_to_series” type, so the taxonomy tracks both closings of the gap - resolved inside the ad, or deliberately carried into a next video.
