Question hooks - opening with the line the viewer answers in their head

The opener that makes the viewer answer before they decide to scroll. Where a question earns the next three seconds and where it reads as a survey.

A question hook hands the viewer a job in the first second. Answering it, even silently, is participation, and participation is a different kind of attention than watching. The whole pattern lives or dies on whether the question is one the viewer already has an opinion about.

A Construction, Not an Angle

The question hook is a grammatical construction, not a content angle. That is why it stacks with almost every other pattern on this list: a question can carry a bold claim, a callout or a contrarian premise inside it. What it cannot carry is nothing. A question with no stake is just a delay before the real hook.

When It Works

  • Problem-aware audiences who can answer the question without being taught anything first
  • Categories with a widely shared frustration the question can name precisely
  • Openers that pair the question with an immediate visual answer rather than a pause
  • Openers that pair the question with an immediate visual answer instead of a pause

When It Does Not

  • The answer is obviously yes, or obviously the advertiser’s. A rhetorical question that flatters the product reads as an ad instantly
  • The viewer needs context before the question makes sense; teaching and asking cannot share three seconds
  • Unaware audiences, who cannot answer the question and therefore have nothing to participate in
  • The rest of the video never answers it. An unanswered opening question is a broken promise

What Admetra Measures

Position in the taxonomy
Hook opener 2 of 10 in Admetra’s parts taxonomy, keyed “question” and labeled “Question”.
How Admetra tags it
“question” is a named value in the closed hook vocabulary - one of seven named openers plus “other”, and a label outside the set normalizes to “other” rather than inventing a new one. The vocabulary is enforced in code in the v12 contract, which is opt-in per invocation; the daily pipeline still runs v8, whose prompt instructs six of the same values - v8 carries no “texture_shock”, and closes on “none” where v12 closes on “other”.
Where the pattern continues
It has no matching entry in the creative-category vocabulary Explore filters on, so an ad that opens on a question is categorized by the beat that answers it - Demo, Problem/Solution or a proof beat. Seven of the ten openers sit the same way; only before/after tease, social-proof open and founder open carry a category of their own.
